Energy communities and associations

Energy communities and associations are initiatives led by citizens and organizations that enable them to take control of local energy production and consumption. They help connect existing energy systems (consumption), operated by local residents, businesses, and municipalities, with renewable energy facilities (production).

What is community energy?

Community energy focuses on the involvement and collaboration of local stakeholders in the production, storage, sharing, and consumption of energy. The idea is that citizens, local governments, and the business sector in a given area jointly own and manage local facilities for renewable energy sources (RES), storage systems, and share the electricity produced among themselves.

The primary goal of community energy is not to generate profit but to build a system of local, sustainable, and efficient energy production and consumption that reduces energy costs, lowers emissions, improves the environment, and decreases dependence on fossil fuels.

Examples of electricity sharing

1. Sharing between own collection points (individuals)

  • (Active) customer in a household in several own collection points:
family house, cottage, apartment for rent
  • Different mode of use / consumption
  • Produced surpluses are used in other collection points
